The aim of this article is to understand the process of building a public project plan by using a visual project management model known as Life Cycle Canvas (LCC) for a case study at the State Government of Rio Grande do Norte. Given the difficulties related to traditional project management practices, it is necessary to evaluate the use of visual models as alternatives for project management. In order to do this, we conducted a case study using a focus group and participant observation with qualitative analysis. The results we obtained demonstrated that the LCC model proved to be suitable to the public sector context, generating greater dynamism of the management process between the initiation and planning steps. The study also identified managerial implications as a way of contributing to reflection on the need to seek new models for public projects.
