Defining perfomance indicators for projects: a qualitative analysis of the literature

Abstract

This article aims to propose a process to define performance indicators for projects. The justification of this research was the difficulty pointed out by teams of projects to define performance indicators, and the paucity of studies to guide them in the procedures that should be performed. The methodology adopted to develop the process was the Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which was conducted in Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases. From this review were selected 15 articles that describe step-by-step accomplished to define indicators in real projects. The analysis of these articles was conducted through content analysis, coding the steps described. The process proposed in the results is composed by five activities: (1) analyze strategic information, (2) map possible project indicators, (3) adopt selection strategies to select mapped indicators, (4) filter and (5) validate selected indicators. The research contributes to expand the use of indicators and and better understanding of the theme.
