Benefits of spare parts inventory optimization jointly with the maintenance operations

Abstract

Spare parts are inventory components that meet the maintenance needs in industrial systems. These parts are used when there are failures or some component needs to be replaced. The effective management of spare parts inventory decreases equipments downtime, reduces inventory and/or maintenance costs and improves operational safety. The optimization of spare parts inventory jointly with the maintenance operations brings real advantages to the companies. The literature presents eighteen models with this approach, each one with its peculiarities, without a joint analysis of them that shows the advantages of one over the other and the improvements to be approached in future. The objective of this work is to analyze these models jointly, to emphasize the benefits attributed to each them and to present possible future work opportunities in the area.
