Abstract

This article presents the results of an exploratory study carried out in two recycling cooperatives in Santo André (SP). It was justified by the growth in the number of cooperatives in the national scene. This study aimed to verify the cooperative contributions to the generation of employment and income, providing social transformation and recovery of citizenship and contributing to sustainability. A case study was conducted in two cooperative showing the results of each. The conclusion was that cooperatives can be considered as an alternative to generate employment and income for workers who are outside the labour market. For the cooperatives studied, the practice is positive compared to the previous reality of its members; however, it highlights the heterogeneity of concepts and organizational practices, as well as the dependence on the government, the impossibility of gain to scale and insertion few people, given the low payments.
