Abstract

Nowadays, more than 55% of the global population live in urban areas and the tendency is of that these areas expand considerately in the next decades. The occupation historical of these areas and the quickness that this process occurred, bring a series of challenges and opportunities to the development of health, resilient and sustainable cities. In this way, it is urgent that urban ecosystems become an object of study of the researchers and the information generated is used for good planning and management of cities.

To contribute with this process, this edition of the Journal of Environmental Management & Sustainability (GeAS Journal) brings some of the manuscripts submitted to the Brazilian and Ibero-American Congress of Urban Forestry, event yearly idealized by the Sociedade Brasileira de Arborização Urbana (SBAU). In 2021, in function of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was integrally realized in the virtual format, during the period of October, 03 to 06, and gathered some of the most recognized professionals in the world in this thematic area.

The manuscripts of this especial edition will help the local, national and global efforts to use urban forests to hit the sustainable development goals (UN), providing valuable information for researchers from different areas, entities and professional organizations, managers and decision-makers. They covered regional and local diagnoses of urban forestry, analyses of fall risk, cut immunity and public safety.

We hope that this selection of articles will be useful to support new studies and encourage the understanding of the urban forests, aiming the city planning greener and more sustainable. We wish you all a good read!
