Abstract

The environmental crisis is complex and demand not only technical measures, but also transformative solutions of perception and vision of individuals. So systemic thought as a more holistic approach can be adopted as an important tool in this process. Therefore, this study has the purpose of diagnosing the environmental challenges of the State School Beira Rio through systems thinking. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview, and then were tabulated using the method of sociograms and causality circles. It was observed that one of the environmental challenges that the school faces is the lack of selective waste collection. Nevertheless, the school found other alternatives to recycle at least part of recyclable material through the annual "recycled material challenge". Through sociogram, it can be observed that the school relates to various other public and private organizations and up to with the local community, that is, their actions may impact negatively or positively other social actors. Besides that, systemic thought in school allows to note that action has a reciprocal influence can be both cause and consequence, this may contribute to building more responsible members at school community, favoring sustainable development.
