Abstract

This article addresses manager leadership style and information technology project success in the context of Brazilian organizations. This topic is little explored in developing countries. This research aims to analyze the relationship between the leadership style and the success of information technology projects in these organizations. The theoretical foundation was based on the literature on leadership and project success. This is a quantitative research, which covered public and private Brazilian organizations, based in survey, and with a sample of 343 professionals who work with project management. We use a structured questionnaire as a data collection instrument. The data were collected in the second half of 2019. The achieved results signalize that: (1) leadership style adopted by Brazilian organizations needs improvement in several aspects; (2) success in information technology projects focuses on the short and medium-term issues rather than long-term issues; and (3) excellence in leadership style was positively associated with success in information technology projects. The research contributes to the practice of project management, identifying opportunities for Brazilian organizations to improve the long-term results of projects, especially in medium to small organizations.
