Abstract

Research question:  Many people claim that Formula 1 Grands Prix generates positive impacts in their hosting cities.  We have developed a study to assess whether this happens in the case of the Brazilian Formula 1 Grand Prix. Specifically, we have looked into the following question:  What were the impacts of this event in the city of São Paulo in 2015 and 2016?

Research methods: The research was qualitative and exploratory. We analyzed documents such as reports published by the São Paulo City Government and by the company promoting the event, as well as information disclosed in media outlets. We also conducted interviews with the following parties: the deputy mayor of the city of São Paulo, the director of the municipal company responsible for managing the Interlagos Racetrack, the CEO of the promoter company in Brazil, a sports journalist and a resident of the Interlagos district, where the racetrack is located.

Results and findings: The Brazilian GP generated the following impacts in the city: economic (public investment, temporary jobs, sale of services and business opportunities between companies); physical (traffic flow and access roads close to the racetrack); and socio-cultural (sense of pride of residents and increased insecurity in the region of the circuit).

Implications: The results suggest that sports mega-events may have both positive and negative impacts. But when they are held in the same city over years, they reuse pre-existing assets. In these cases, they also allow organizers to develop knowledge and skills that can make the event more sustainable.
