Medication management policy in the portuguese health system - innovation vs sustainability

Innovation in all health processes is recognized in the world as a way to improve the response and health status of the population. These processes function as engines of development but, in the particular case of the drug industry, can jeopardize the sustainability of public systems because of the high costs. In this article, a study of the case of the reform of the drug sector in Portugal is carried out in order to evaluate if the management measures implemented in the drug sector allowed a reduction of costs, without restricting the access and promoting simultaneously the pharmaceutical innovation. As a result of the analysis, it was verified that the innovation did not influence the overall costs with the drug and that access improved, without jeopardizing the sustainability of Portuguese National Health System (NHS).
