Abstract

Aligned with the need to offset CO2 emissions, a new technological paradigm of eco-innovations is emerging. By integrating environmental concerns into agile and lean models, clean technology startups are emerging. These business models are relevant in the scientific community, whether for creating perspectives, tracking trends, breaking paradigms, or generating new ideas. Considering the above, this study aims to answer the following research question: “How do technological capabilities of clean technology startups and green fiscal policies promote R&D in renewable energy eco-innovations?” To do so, a multiple case study method was employed. The results showed that the more structured a company’s technological capabilities, the stronger its driving force for eco-innovation development. In this study, it was observed that green fiscal policies do not have sufficient scope to reach early-stage clean technology startups, but there are incubation and acceleration programs offered by public universities that can support these business models. Thus, it is concluded that part of the eco-innovation creation process is driven by innovative thinking, which is linked to both tacit knowledge and creative spaces. It is also concluded that optimization, adaptation, and reconfiguration of eco-innovations are necessary, and for this, R&D, green fiscal policies, and knowledge exchange have a beneficial and essential relationship for the survival of the company.
