Abstract

The objective of the present study is to verify the efficiency of state public health expenditures in Brazil. To meet this objective, the twenty-six Brazilian states and the Federal District were analyzed in the period from 2005 to 2014. The data were collected from the Accounting Data Collection System of the Federation Institutions of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System. The efficiency analysis is performed using the Data Envelopment Analysis method. The results show that among the 27 federative units, only the State of Maranhão was efficient throughout the analyzed period (2005 to 2014), with 9 being efficient in at least 1 year in the analyzed period in relation to the health indicators. It is concluded that the 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District, in spite of the financial efforts with health, performance is below the expected level of efficiency for the population with vaccination, basic care, hospitalizations, outpatient care and number of health facilities.
