This study aims to analyze the perspective of sustainability in Institutional Development Plans (PDIs) in Federal Higher Education Institutes (IFES), identifying the dimensions which are encompassed by the texts of the Mission & Vision plans declared by the institutions, associating with the guidelines of the National Education Plan and its peculiarities. This qualitative and quantitative study analyzed 28 PDIs IFES in Brazil, by way of a documentary research. The content analyzes techniques and simple descriptive statistics, and t-test and chi-square were used. Among the findings it is emphasized that more than half of the IFEs surveyed are not following the current PDI nor completely follow the law, recommendations and guidelines guiding the MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture).
