Abstract

Introduction: Muscle imbalances represent an important risk factor for sports injuries, and in this sense, the evaluation of muscle strength becomes relevant in the context of injury prevention in street runners. Objective: To analyze the functional performance of knee muscles in a sample of street runners. Methods: This study included 24 street runners. The muscle strength in the knee flexors and extensors was valued by isokinetic dynamometry in the concentric mode, in the 60°/s, 180°/s e 300°/s speeds. Results: All runners didn’t show muscles asymmetries greater than 10% between members. However, there were unilateral muscular imbalances (H:Q) ratio, especially in the runner women (47,56±8,60% in the dominant member and 45,17±5,18% in the non-dominant member), and a law resistance to fatigue (50,34±8,07%) in the hamstring muscles in the dominant member, in the male runners. Conclusions: This sample showed important risks factors to the musculoskeletal lesions development, so, the insertion of a sports injury prevention to these subjects, becomes fundamental.
