Introduction: Muscle weakness tend to increase with aging and disability impairs the quality of life of the elderly. Objective: to investigate whether there is a correlation between handgrip strength and disability in community-based elderly. Methods: 62 elderly patients participated (70.14 ± 6.29 years). Variables: age, sex, level of education, marital status and economic class, handgrip strength and disability. Descriptive statistics and Spearman’s Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the correlation between the variables self-reported incapacity and handgrip strength (a=0.05). Results: The elderly showed an average age of 70.14 years, and most of them were female, married, with low schooling and low-middle income. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between disability and handgrip strength, as well as between manual grip strength and the cognition and mobility domains of WHODAS, an instrument used to assess disability. The other WHODAS domains showed no significant correlation with the handgrip strength. Conclusion: Physical function is related to disability levels in the elderly.
