Effect of rest intervals in resistance training on hypotensive responses in recreationally active individuals

Abstract

Introduction: Resistance training (RT) has been recommended as a non-pharmacological intervention to prevent and treat cardiovascular disorders. Objective: To compare the effect of different rest intervals between sets on the postexercise hypotensive response (PEH) after a RT session. Methods: Twenty normotensive males were randomized to Short Rest Interval group ((SRI), n = 10) and Traditional Rest Interval group ((TRI), n = 10). The individuals performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions, at 70%1RM, with different rest interval between sets (SRI = 45 seconds; TRI = 1 minute) in 4 different exercises. Blood Pressure (BP) and Heart Rate (HR) were measured before the RT session, immediately after and every 5 minutes after the end of the RT session for 30 minutes. Results: Both rest intervals between sets are efficient in promoting (PEH) after a RT session. Conclusion: Rest interval between sets of 45 seconds and 1 minute, under the conditions of the present study, are significant in the promotion of PEH.
