Abstract

In this study it was aimed to analyze the position of the feet during the gait, using and not using the functional bandage, of children and youngsters with and without Down Syndrome (DS). In this transversal study participated 12 children: 6 with DS and 6 typical, with ages of 3 to 5 years and 10 to 20 years. After the approval of the Research Ethics Committee (Uniara) and the institutions invited to participate in the study, children were evaluated in a single day. In the position of the feet, using gouache on brown paper, considering the step length, it was verified the width of the step, abduction of the feet, the gait cycle and rhythm of the gait. It was made a functional bandage in order to correct the position of the feet of children and youngsters with DS. The results were presented in a descriptive way and by the tests One-Way Anova and Tukey, p ≤0.05. There was a significant difference in the length of the step between youngsters with DS and the typical ones, the width of the step and the abduction of the feet, between children with DS and the typical ones. The cadence during the gait of children and youngsters with DS was greater than the typical ones. The functional bandage showed no major effect on the correction of the feet of children and youngsters with DS.
