Abstract

Background: Inhaled corticosteroid (IC) used in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may compromise the function of the respiratory muscles and the lower limbs, leading to the increase in the functional limitation severity.

Objective: The objective was to assess the IC action on the functional capacity, on the static and functional balance deficit, on the fall risk and on the proprioceptive acuity in individuals with COPD.

Methods: The study involved 20 COPD individuals, 12 of them used IC (G1), eight of them did not use IC (G2), and the other 12 individuals as the control group (CG). All the participants were assessed by using: Body mass index, airway Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise capacity (BODE), the Baecke questionnaire, Berg balance scale, fall risk, static balance on force plate, and knee proprioceptive acuity.

Results: The BODE index presented a significant difference among all the groups (p<0.001), and G1 was higher than G2. For Baecke, G1 and G2 had lower scores than the CG (p=0.03). The Berg score was similar between the G1 and G2 groups and between the CG and G2 groups. The risk of falls was higher for G1 and G2 when compared to the CG (p<0.001), and G1 was higher than G2. There were no differences for proprioceptive acuity (p>0.14), and for the static balance analysis (p>0.05).

Conclusion: IC influenced the BODE index and fall risk but it did not alter the functional capacity, the static and functional balance, and the proprioceptive acuity of the knee in individuals with COPD.
