Introduction: Hypertension (HBP) is a highly prevalent chronic disease and represents an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Objectives: To assess the effects of a program of physical exercise on blood pressure and maximum oxygen consumption levels in a hypertensive population. Methods: A sample of 30 women with hypertension, age over 60 years, clinically stable was selected. In the evaluation of the sample, variables were measured blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), VO2 max. The sample was divided into two groups: CG (n=15) and EG (n=15). The EG was submitted to the protocol of supervised exercise for 12 weeks. Results: Best results were statistically significant (p <0.005) when comparing the values of HR, BP and VO2 max before and after the period of the exercise protocol in EG. Conclusion: It can be seen decreased levels of BP and HR analyzed, showing hypotension and bradycardia as effects of physical exercise, and these results are consistent with data previously reported in the literature. Key words: Blood pressure; Elderly; Exercise.Downloads
