Bone marrow volunteer donation: comparison between non registered and registered donors

Introduction: Patients with indication of bone marrow transplantation having no related compatible donors depends of the altruism of bone marrow volunteer donors. Objective: To compare the profile of non donors and bone marrow volunteer donors registered at Redome. Methods: A total of 180 individuals male and female, 80 non donors (group I) and 100 volunteer donors (group II) were enrolled. Results: Ethnicity, gender, marital status and religious option were similar between both groups but age mean values (p=0.001) and number of sons (p=0.02) were higher in group I. The group II presented higher education level (p=0.04) and good health condition (p=0.004). Solidarity and educational campaign were considered as favorable factors to increase the number of enrolled volunteer bone marrow donors. Conclusion: In conclusion, the education level and educational campaign are important to take into consideration the decision of the population to enroll as voluntary bone marrow donor.Downloads
