Objectives: To assess the physical fitness of residents of long-term institutions for low-income elderly individuals. Methods: A study was conducted in six institutions located in three regions of Brazil. The sample consisted of 78 elderly individuals, with a mean age of 77.4 years (SD = 7.9). The AAHPERD functional fitness test, adapted for the institutionalized elderly, was applied. Results: Flexibility, coordination, agility and endurance were considered to be regular on average; only strength was considered to be good. The index of overall physical fitness was considered regular on average. The greater the individual’s degree of dependency, the lesser the strength and the results of the general physical fitness index; the better the coordination and agility, the better the level of independence. Conclusion: The practice of exercise among institutionalized elderly individuals should be encouraged to help them maintain and/or improve physical skills that contribute to the maintenance of functional capacity in this population.Downloads
