Abstract

Introduction: Validated instruments are necessary for the evaluation of energy consumption and expenditure of hemiparetic individuals. Objective: To investigate the concurrent validity of the Human Activity Profile (HAP) with direct measures of oxygen consumption (VO2) during submaximal activities of chronic hemiparetic. Methods: Cross-sectional study. VO2 was evaluated through a portable ergometer during maximum, habitual gait, and going up/down stairs. The level of physical activity was evaluated by PAH, a self-report questionnaire. The Adjusted Activity Score (AAS) was used for the analysis. Results: 55 individuals participated in the study. There was a statistically significant, positive correlation between AAS from HAP and VO2 at maximal gait (r=0.37, p=0.009), moderate magnitude in the habitual gait (r=0.40, p=0.004), and going up/down stairs (r=0.43, p=0.004). Conclusion: The results demonstrated an association between self-reported measures and VO2 in submaximal activities.
