Abstract

Objective: This study aims i) to compare the perception of risks and benefits associated with the consumption of electronic cigarettes among smokers and non-smokers youth; ii) to verify the association between social factors and the use of electronic cigarettes; and iii) to identify relevant product characteristics for its consumption.

Methods: A survey was carried out with 143 undergraduate students, between 17 and 30 years old, smokers and non-smokers, who attend institutions in São Paulo. We performed descriptive statistics, t-test and logistic regression.

Originality/relevance: We have identified the “social smokers” group, formed by individuals who smoke occasionally. This finding adds evidence about the social influence on electronic cigarette consumption among youth and sheds light on how they perceive themselves as consumers of this product.

Contributions: The main results show that electronic cigarette users are aware of its negative consequences, however, they use it in search of relaxing and tension relief. It was also identified that the social circle strongly influences the use of electronic cigarettes, especially the influence of close friends. Finally, the aspects considered most important for the consumption of this product are related to taste (taste and flavor). Practical implications are suggestions related to awareness-raising actions emphasizing the risks associated with electronic cigarette consumption and implications for public policies, such as regulation.
