Abstract

Introduction: It is thought that the more strength, the lower the joint flexibility. Objective: Analyze the flexibility and muscular strength between practicing and non-practicing bodybuilders. Methods: The study included 120 adult volunteers, aged between 18 years and 46 years, divided into 4 groups: Sedentary (S); Bodybuilding practitioners (M); Workers not practicing resistance exercises (T); Workers practicing resistance exercises (TM). Results: The M and TM groups presented significant amount in months of bodybuilding practice, besides the predominant flexibility of pectoralis major. The strength of the hamstrings was predominant in the TM group as well. Only the TM group showed a high negative correlation between flexibility and quadriceps muscle strength. Conclusion: Even if flexibility establishes a mechanical advantage over a movement, it can not be said to be directly related to muscle strength.
