Abstract

This article is the result of a bibliographical research and its main objective is to present a study about the context in which the Law 10639/2003 was created, which establishes the obligation to teach African and Afro-Brazilian History and Culture in education emphasiz-ing its importance and the challenges to its incorporation, even fifteen years after its im-plementation. We conclude that the aforementioned Law represents advances in the strug-gle for educational social rights, especially for blacks, since it was opposed to the presence of racism and its effects, whether in the broader educational policy or in the organization and functioning of school education , curricula, pedagogical practices and social relations in school, but many challenges still need to be overcome if it is to be effective, especially in matters of teacher education, the production of books and didactic-pedagogical materials, curricular changes, among others.
