This paper focuses on the need for people’s education so that they become good investigators. It also presents ideas and suggestions concerning the necessity of developing the existing spirit of investigation or research in children and young people. It begins with a warning made by John Dewey in 1916 about schools willing to create disciples rather than researchers. Dewey’s warning and his proposals for an education which fosters investigators are the background for this paper. It shows that nowadays it is common practice. Some of Antônio Damásio’s indications are also taken into account. Following, based on the ideas of Matthew Lipman, Dewey’s disciple, it is proposed that learning to investigate occurs throughout all elementary school, through the upbringing and development of ‘investigation skills’. Such skills are indicated and paths towards their development in school practice are suggested.Downloads
