Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the background and the consequent debt and the strategies adopted by individuals to become compliant, considering the debt resulting financial factors, personal and social. To achieve the objective, 14 individuals whose name were linked to an active debt register were interviewed. The main results show that default may arise from the overconsumption, lack of planning for unauthorized charges mainly by telephony or even by loan for a friend or family member. As a consequence, respondents have exhibited major concerns, discomfort, distress, hurt, embarrassment and shame, can not obtain credit and are often askd by relatives to be in this situation. These results indicate that strategies should be carried out to educate people in a finantial way, so they can plan their spending in order to guide them to run amuck and become delinquent and if the situation has not already reached this level that way out of it. In addition, the need for greater surveillance, is enphasysed especially in relation to telephony for unauthorized charges. About personal consequences, a strategy that could be adopted by individuals is to seek psychological help.
