Abstract

Sertão-Brasília is a video presenting episodes and tales about the countrymen’s life in the Central Plateau of Brazil and about their children and grandchildren who now reside in the national capital. This video graphically shows the crisis existing in the countryside depicted in João Guimarães Rosa's monumental novel, Grande Sertão: Veredas. This tension emerges from the pact of modernity sealed between Juscelino Kubitchek and the international financial capital in the early stages of the city of Brasília’s construction. Based on the Paradigm of Complexity developed by Edgar Morin, the pact and love affair metaphors drawn from Guimarães Rosa's novel, and the autobiographical testimonies that compose the video itself, this article shows the Brazilian countryside culture as a potential source for withdrawal from antiquated pacts, reorganization of the traditional Sertão-Brasília axis, and sustainability reconquest.
